Ralphie as a stray in Palm Springs |
We'd like to introduce you to Ralphie.
We first saw her lying
in a ditch on the side of Highway 111 in Palm
Springs, CA. We thought she'd been hit so we
stopped to see if she was OK. She hadn't ben
hit, but she was very frightened and kept
running away from us (almost getting hit several
times). We couldn't catch her.
A couple of days later we received an
email from our
friends who live a few blocks away saying that
she had showed up at their house but they
couldn't catch her either. Then a few days after
that she was spotted again at a nearby shopping
centre hot & scared but kept running away.
We kept thinking about her and we were really
worried, especially since it was so hot in the
desert (mid 40's) and she didn't seem to have
any road-sense and kept crossing HWY111.
I stopped by the Palm Springs Animal Shelter to
see if she had been brought in as a stray but
she wasn't there. While I was at the Shelter I
found out that they were looking for volunteers,
and since we are down in Palm Springs a few
times a year I decided to volunteer at the
shelter.
Well, about a week later as I was sitting in the
lobby of the animal shelter waiting for my
orientation session to start and guess who
walked past me on her way in from a walk with
one of the volunteers. It was RALPHIE!!! I
couldn't believe it!!
We spent some quality-time together at the
shelter and she wanted right up on my lap.
She was very sweet but still very scared and
wasn't doing well in the shelter, so we decided
to foster her temporarily to give her a break
from the shelter environment.
We talked about keeping her but we weren't
really sure if we were ready for that kind of
committment and having a dog really complicates
things when we travel so much. We decided no.
On the day before we had to leave to drive back
up to Vancouver it came time we had to return
Ralphie to the Palm Springs Animal Shelter
and... well...we just couldn't do it.
We decided to adopt her and bring her home with
us. Ralphie is a new Canadian!!!!
By the way, if you're wondering why we called
her Ralphie, it's because the first time we saw
her on the highway it was infront of "Ralph's"
grocery store so we thought it was a perfect
name.
