We all pick up travel tips to pass
along when traveling. Here are my
latest personal travel tips that I
share with friends.

Holafly eSim - eSims,
which provide smart phone internet
connectivity while traveling, are
easier and cheaper than in the
past. We have used several eSim
companies over the past few
years. For our past 2 trips (Europe
and Asia) we have used Holafly
eSim. They provide unlimited data
and have regional plans that
seamlessly provide connectivity
while traveling in a number of
countries. While you turn off your
Canadian cell phone, you can still
use communication apps like Skype,
WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Our
Asia regional plan (including 11
countries) was only $75 CAD for 23
days. Purchase the plan and download
the app before your trip, then after
landing (and before we got to the
gate) we had our internet connection
in Japan working. The Holafly
connectivity also seamlessly
switched to S. Korea, back to Japan,
and then to Vietnam and finally
Cambodia.

Google Maps (free) – With
unlimited internet connectivity, we
found Google Maps very useful in
Japan. Tokyo is the largest city in
the world but has a great
subway/train system. Google Maps
helped plan which Tokyo train route
to take to get around, guiding us
right to the correct station. GM
gave the amount of yen the trip
would cost, using our Suica transit
cards in our Apple wallets. It even
directed us to which
platform to head to (to get on the
right train going the correct
direction) and even which car to get
on for quickest transfer to your
next train or exit from the station!

Google Translate (free) – We
found Google translate as sort of a
travel miracle, or at least a Star
Trek type communication device. It
translated text on menus, signs, and
even translated verbal communication
back and forth with people who know
no English. Always download the
language files while on wifi to
allow GT to work quicker when in the
field.
